Having spent all of my life living in a different place from extended family, I've learned that celebrations are about connection in whatever form that may take - friends, colleagues, furry friends, or chosen family.
Over the past 20 years, the lunar new year has been far bigger than Christmas in my world. It's fun to now be sitting in 40 degrees with a fake pine tree in the living room, a reminder of how celebrations can look different for everyone.
I often ponder how celebrations are like that inspiringly cheerful friend who somehow makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy, despite the chaos of an unruly kitchen and tangled decorations. It's not about orchestrating perfect moments or expensive gifts. It's about something much deeper - the simple magic of human connection.

Whether you celebrate a particular holiday traditionally, in your own way, or not at all, there's something special in those moments when people become a bit kinder, a bit more understanding, a bit more inclusive to all.
Imagine a world where we carried this spirit all year round. Where we looked at each other with more compassion and tolerance, regardless of our backgrounds. Where we stretched that little bit further to see beyond our differences and recognise our shared hopes, fears, and ideas.
Diversity isn't something to fear - it's something to celebrate. Just like the many ways people around the world mark special occasions, our differences are at the core of what make life rich and interesting. Some will have big family gatherings, some quiet moments, some no celebration at all. And that's okay.
The real gift isn't found in a single tradition, but in the reminder that kindness knows no borders. That respect doesn't require agreement. That understanding begins when we genuinely listen to each other.
We are incredibly fortunate to live in a multicultural and diverse community where people mark significant moments in wonderfully different ways. From Christmas to Diwali, from Eid to Lunar New Year, each celebration reflects the mosaic of our shared human experience.
For those eager to deepen their understanding and recognise important cultural moments throughout the year, the Diversity and Inclusion Planning Calendar is an incredible resource. It offers a comprehensive guide to help us respectfully acknowledge the diverse celebrations and significant dates that matter to our colleagues, neighbours, and community members.
For us here at Woven, may your days be filled with understanding, connection, and joy!
